Does the Soul need a midwife?
We are all encouraged to eat well and exercise regularly to make the most of our physical health but how often do we consider the nourishment of our spiritual inner lives?
Spiritual direction is not some new craze but is as old as the Church for there have always been people who supported fellow pilgrims and helped them to make sense of the way of Christ. Today's spiritual directors are not people who will tell you what to do or impose on you a particular path. Instead they act as companions on the spiritual journey. They are people who through training and experience can help individuals read the signposts and pay attention to the ways in which the divine and daily life interconnect. They can provide a safe, non-judgmental context in which to explore things of the spirit and find ways of nourishing the soul. Like a midwife the director encourages, watches, coaches, shares resources, cares for us and reminds us of our inner wisdom-but they cannot do the work for us-it is our own unique journey and only we can set the pace and walk the path.
If you would like to know more please contact the Association of Spiritual Directors Secretary Sr Marlene Dunn, 7 Karamu St, Palmerston North. If you would like to respond to people coming to you for spiritual companionship, or you consider that God may be calling you to this ministry you may like to consider enrolling for the Spiritual Directors' Formation Programme. Information is available from the Course Coordinator, Sue Pickering, 83 Vivian St, New Plymouth sgmtp(at)xtra.co.nz or from the website of Spiritual Growth Ministries: http://www.sgm.org.nz
SGM is a network of people from diverse Christian traditions and experience who find depth and meaning through the whole heritage of contemplative spirituality.
