New Forms of Local Ministry

Graeme Nicholas, the Mission Resource Team Co-Director for the northern South Island, writes the following for people who may have enquiries about new forms of local ministry.

For those who are interested in finding out more about the decisions of Assembly in regard to forms of local ministry, we have put some useful information on the web. More material will be added to this page as it is developed. At the moment it is simply a summary of what Assembly did and some implications. It also offers a version of the changes to the Book of Order re local ministry (provisional for information only until the Book of Order is available in its amended form).

A summary briefing will be coming to Presbyteries but if your presbytery is discussing the matter you may like to print off some of this material from the web.

So, have a look at the Local Ministry page on the MRT section of the website

New Zealand Lay Preachers' Association

The NZLPA is an organisation of Lay Preachers who have been accredited by one of the five negotiating churches - Anglican, Churches of Christ, Congregational, Methodist and Presbyterian. They report annually to the Co-operative Ventures Forum and to the National Body of each of the member churches.

Their task is to encourage and support Lay Preachers in the conduct of worship and to provide and publicise training programmes, training events and continuing education. They issue Membership Certificates to accredited Preachers, and Long Service Certificates to those who have completed over 25 years service.

Their magazine, 'The Preacher', is published four times a year to encourage members in their work, by providing and advertising resources to assist in worship and sermon preparation.

Their courses and resources, including 'The Preacher', are also available to lay preachers-in-training, ministers, worship committees and other interested people.

If you would like to become a member of NZLPA or subscribe to 'The Preacher', you can send your application to the Treasurer/Membership Secretary, David Davis, 1/63 Fraser Cres, Upper Hutt (ph. (04) 971-5002) or e-mail: davdav(at)paradise.net.nz

(Membership of NZLPA including 'The Preacher' is $20 waged or $15 unwaged. 'The Preacher' alone is $10 for individuals or $15 for parishes.
