In the last 15 months a new term has become part of our language. It is the phrase "ground zero". At the time of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre twin towers we were in Atlanta, Georgia. During a forum at Columbia Seminary a few days after the attack, someone asked "Where is God in all this?". One of the staff responded "At ground zero".
That is a faith statement about Christmas. In the birth of Jesus God came to "ground zero", and, in the living presence of the risen Christ, still does.
We are very aware of the pressures those of you at ground zero in the Church will face in the weeks before Christmas. In the midst of it all may you have enough "space" in the clamouring calls that will fill your waking moments - that your celebration of the birth of Jesus may be one that is marked by joy, peace and hope.
And if you are taking "space" as holidays, may you experience real refreshment.
With greetings in Christ to you and your loved ones from both of us
Michael and Dorothy Thawley
