A Manual of Doctrine

This Manual of Doctrine was first published in 1950.

From the cover

Doctrine is not precisely the same thing as religion, but without it religion is tongue-tied - and that at a time it is most necessary to speak. The average person in our age understands little of the real import of the religion of the New Testament, although in it will be found the unsuspected solution of certain fundamental human problems. In this book the Church takes an important step towards remedying the situation, and if any person reads it carefully he will have some confusions cleared up and learn about a way of living which makes sense.

The author, the Rev. J. M. Bates, M.A., the minister of the St Clair Presbyterian Church, Dunedin, was the logical choice of the Church for the responsible task of writing this book. Besides being a born teacher, he is a gifted scholar, and in this timely book he has, with clarity and precision, given us the fundamentals of the Christian religion.
