Jo Ryan: PYM Intern 2003

This is the last time you'll see Jo writing in this space.

Her year as PYM Intern finishes at Christmas. Jo's been a real star this year and we're going to  miss her heaps... but we wish her well as she goes down to study at Otago in 2004.

I love Christmas, but I always get a bit stressed out by the whole present-giving thing. See, I really want to give my family and friends presents that are meaningful and appreciated. The problem is that sometimes it's too hard finding the perfect gift, so on Christmas Day they end up with yet another tie/photo frame/soap/decorative candle.

I've sometimes felt the same way about giving of myself to others and to God - I want to, but there have been times when I haven't known what I've got to offer. I think I've been pretty lucky though, because I've had lots of people in my life who've encouraged me to find out what I'm good at (often by trial and error!) and have helped me to grow and share the gifts God's given me. It's these people who have inspired me to get involved
in youth ministry.

One of the best things about working as PYM Intern this year has been meeting so many people (like you) who are giving what they have, serving God by making Jesus Christ known in their communities. There are loads of these amazing people in our church, and they too inspire me to want to make a difference. Hooray for Presbyterians!

p.s. Unfortunately I don't think present-selection is among the skills I've developed this year, so sorry if anyone gets a decorative candle.
