HIV/AIDS in Zambia
HIV/AIDS: In July 2004, the population was estimated to be 10,462,436. The horrific mortality rate due to the AIDS pandemic has drastically lowered life expectancy and dramatically raised infant mortality rates. Estimates taken in 2001 recorded the infection rate at 21.5% or 1.2 million of the adult population with a resultant 120,000 deaths in that year alone. This has dramatically changed the age and gender distribution within the population with a resultant negative impact upon the economy.
