The Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa - Synod of Zambia

- Synod Executive Committee
The Synod of Zambia comprises of two presbyteries. The central presbytery covers the area from Livingstone to Lusaka and is made up of 17 congregations. The Copperbelt presbytery of the north is made up of 12 congregations. The church is led by a dynamic executive who have developed an exciting vision for the church. They believe in a model of holistic ministry which develops strong leadership amongst their members and seeks to address the ravages of poverty in their communities. Responsibilities are undertaken by committees which deal with Ministry, Church Growth, Cross Cultural Exchanges, HIV/AIDS, Church Associations, Youth and Finance.

Garden Church Women Tie-Dye Project: We were delighted to be able to provide seeding finance to enable this worthwhile project to get underway.Tie-dying is a chemical process which is used to prepare fabric for the making of beautiful cultural garments for the women of Zambia. The hope is this project will grow to create employment and income for many of the women in the congregation. This is a direct response to the extreme poverty faced by most Zambians on a daily basis. Many women resort to smashing stones into smaller pieces in the hopes that a builder might purchase a sack to use in the foundations of a building (like photo below).
Rev. Henry Mbombo has expressed the deep desire of their people to establish 'twining relationships' with congregations and Presbyteries within New Zealand.

We were delighted to be able to offer start-up finance for a youth centre at Livingstone Memorial Presbyterian Church. Their hope is to provide a place where youth can come together to talk about their frustrations and pain as well as socialise in a Christian environment. In time it is hoped they will be able to offer counselling and career guidance as well.
With the money donated to Livingstone Memorial Presbyterian Church for their youth centre, they were able to purchase a pool table, a mini soccer table, a table tennis, a chess set, a trampoline and a badmiton set. The youths are already enjoying these added resources to this facility.
Mtendere Presbyterian Mission School
Mtendere Presbyterian Mission School was established to provide education for the most disadvantaged children in an atmosphere of love and spiritual care. This includes food, clothing and counselling when necessary. It covers preschool, primary and secondary schooling.
Recently St Columba of Botany donated NZ$3000.00 to the school. An acknowledgement was received from the school thanking them for the donation and that it would go towards some of the most pressing needs such as desks and textbooks.
