Primary Mission Relationship

History of mission work in Vanuatu [pdf 67KB]

The 2002 General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand affirmed the Presbyterian Church of Vanuatu as our 'primary mission relationship'.  This special status is not meant to relegate others to a secondary position.  Rather it is an expression of the fact that we have been working in Vanuatu the longest.  We are delighted to be partners on a number of current projects that we encourage our congregations to support.

Bush Missioner' programme

This very creative programme involves a one-year training programme at Talua Ministry Training Centre.  A suitable church member from an island community is trained in pastoral care and primary health care.  This training costs approximately NZ$860 for the one year programme.  The graduates are then deployed in their home community and earn approximately NZ$75 per month.

Ebule Rural Training Centre

In response to an increase of projects and interest in Vanuatu, we have appointed two more Project Officers to Vanuatu - Rob & Barb Meier.

Rob and his wife, Barb, live in Vila and are working with Ebule Rural Training Centre to develop a sustainable market for the range of products they produce through the Centre.  Barb will be providing tuition in health care. This assignment is in partnership between the GMO, VSA(Volunteer Service Abroad) and the Prebyterian Church of Vanuatu.

Navota Farm & Rural Training Centre

The GMO has been pleased to continue supporting the revitalisation of this significant project. This has been a significant expression of partnership over many years.

Onesua Presbyterian College

The College has 30 academic staff and 24 auxillary staff.  They have a student population of just under 400 ranging from Year 7 to Year 12.  Onesua hope to start a Year 13 programme.

  • In April 2007 students and staff from St Andrews College in Christchurch visited Onesua School.
  • InSeptember 2007, staff and students from Rangiruru School in Christchurch will also visit.
