Ministry as white water rafting: Rethinking ministry and leadership when the only constant is change
A ministry intensive for those over 50
Lead by Kevin Ward, Knox Centre for Ministry and Leadership.
A minister in this age category commented recently that he and most of his peers were ill-equipped for the kind of ministry required today: “In many ways ministers of my ilk were taught to map read on well marked roads, not navigate on stormy seas. Changes are significant and irreversible – while tomorrow continues to arrive ahead of schedule, yesterday can never be revisited.” Kevin is in this age group himself and often find this a theme among his peers. As one person put it bluntly, “The way I have done ministry successfully for the last 25 years no longer works.”
The objective is to provide material which will open up new ways of thinking about church, ministry and society today. It is an opportunity for experienced ministry practitioners to reflect on their ministry in conversation with others who are grappling with similar issues.
The Seminar will be held in Wellington, from midday Monday 11 August to midday Friday 15 August.

Media Prayer Day
31 August 2008 is “Media Prayer Day” throughout New Zealand.
Churches of all denominations nationwide will join together in prayer for the spread of the Christian Gospel through NZ’s mass media.
Media Prayer Day has the endorsement and support of every mainstream Christian denomination. Last time, in 2006, more than 850 churches participated in Media Prayer Day. It is expected that more than 1000 will be involved this year.
The mass media has become our mission field in ways never dreamed of a few years ago. On Sunday 31 August, all NZ Christians have a unique opportunity to join together in prayer for their fellow-Christians working in television, radio, film, electronic and advertising media and print.
In short, we’re asking the churches of New Zealand to take a few minutes of their Sunday service on 31 August to pray :
- for Christian working within all forms of mass media.
- for those who have great influence within NZ’s mass media – high profile presenters and those who hold the power behind the scenes.
- For media gate keepers – those who can keep the Christian message out, or make a way for God’s message be communicated clearly.
We encourage churches to let us know of their participation by phoning 0800 PRAYER – or by emailing us at info(at)mediaprayerday.org.nz
We also have a website www.mediaprayerday.org.nz with resources, downloads, contact details and ideas for incorporating a creative ‘media focus’ in to their church service on that day.
