Artful Expressions of Spirituality

The success of an exhibition displaying the creative talents of St Giles' Presbyterian Church (Christchurch) has prompted organisers to consider making the event an annual one.

The 'St Giles' Church - Celebrating Creativity' exhibition ran in November 2001 and was well supported by the congregation and the local community.

Featuring the work of 33 individuals aged 18-80, works on display explored a variety of spiritual themes including light and dark, rainbows and creation.

Staging the exhibition was a team effort for the Papanui-based parish with Rev John Hunt contributing his book on Celtic spirituality and members of the congregation helping throughout the week.

Exhibits included everything from poetry and portraits to crochet and charcoal drawings created by members of St Giles' Art Groups, which explore spiritual themes through art.

Art Group facilitator Margaret Harvey says the initial group was formed 18 months ago with three groups now meeting weekly.

"The group is fairly informal and the emphasis is on enjoying the process of creating art rather than the outcome," she says.

"We've been amazed at the depth of talent out there - I think what we had on display may be the tip of the iceberg."
