Meet John Daniels
Originally from India, John has lived in many parts of New Zealand and had a variety of jobs in human resources, adult education, management, chaplaincy, and as a pastoral theologian, lay worker and minister.
Thirteen years ago he and his wife Paula were in a serious head-on car crash involving a drunk driver. At the time he was in a senior role in a New Zealand multinational company, and providing voluntary ministry and workplace chaplaincy there. The experience made him rethink the question "is this where God really wants me to be?" - a question he has revisited regularly. The process led him to on-going postgraduate work in pastoral theology with an emphasis on leadership issues, and eventually to becoming an ordained minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand.
In his role as Co-Director for MRT for the southern South Island ( based in Dunedin) John sees many exciting things happening in the church and community. He acknowledges that there's also lots of doom and gloom as the mainline churches in general face decline in many areas, but perceives a spark of relevance in the Presbyterian Church which is growing and maturing.
His desire is to help nurture this spark. He wants to serve leaders and congregations, and resource and support ministers in developing and strengthening their mission focus. Leadership can be a lonely business and John wants to help leaders know there's a friend out there who is wholeheartedly interested in them, their wellbeing and what's important for their ministry.

Education for Ministry
The Board for this excellent study and experiential course met recently and were excited to hear of large numbers of former students becoming more involved in leadership and further study. A number of students had used their EFM study as credits towards further qualifications in theology or such areas as social work. The course has recently become one of the options under the Ecumenical Board of Theological Studies and the EFM Board is considering registration that would enable people to do the course primarily for a qualification or just for their own growth.
The course works on the premise that every Christian is called to ministry and the programme provides people with the education to carry out that ministry. EFM offers an opportunity to discover how to respond to the call to Christian service. It provides a part time 4 year course with usually fortnightly meetings for reflection, worship and prayer. Study covers the Hebrew Scriptures, the New Testament, the early church, church history and thinkers and a New Zealand component.
If you would like to know more about the course for yourself or as a great basis for lay training for leading worship please contact Verity Doak (verityd(at)presbyterian.org.nz) or the Registrar, Barrie Gimson, PO Box 12 002, Wellington, Telephone 04 479 7620, or email gully(at)paradise.net.nz
