Introduction

When the General Assembly decided in 2006 to establish the Knox Centre for Ministry and Leadership, it expressed a hope that the new Centre would establish training opportunities for a range of ministries, not just the Ministry of Word and Sacraments, and that it would take its programmes to the presbyteries and parishes around the country rather than expect everyone to travel to Dunedin.

In 2007 we surveyed parish ministers and clerks of sessions and parish councils about ministry training needs. We sent the results of that survey to a number of people in our church who represent a variety of styles and contexts of ministry. We asked them to offer workshops to the church, and were overwhelmed by the positive response. You can see below the exciting list of over 50 workshops on offer for 2008/2009.

All that presbyteries and parishes have to do is select the workshops they would like to make available in their area. They let the Knox Centre for Ministry and Leadership know their preferences. We then liaise with the people offering the workshops to sort out suitable dates and other practical details, and to make sure than no one person is being overworked.

The Knox Centre for Ministry and Leadership works in partnership with presbyteries and parishes to promote and run the workshops. The Centre underwrites the cost of running them, and charges each workshop participant $30 for a full-day workshop and $20 for a half-day workshop to recover some of its costs.

A minimum of 10 people is required for each workshop. To make the best use of our resources we would prefer workshops to be hosted by presbyteries and regional clusters of parishes rather than individual churches.
The contact person at the Knox Centre for Ministry and Leadership is the Registrar:

This initiative is undertaken in consultation with the National Mission Office, Presbyterian Youth Ministry (PYM), Kids Friendly and Te Wananga a Rangi, who already provide an extensive range of valuable training opportunities. Many of those opportunities are listed here too. If you want to take up any of these, phone or email the relevant contact person directly.
