Mission Trip to Nepal Nov-Dec 08
With: Hope for the Nations Nepal (HFTN) - This is a local indigenous mission that is developing a partnership with the PCANZ. HFTN has four major areas of focus.
- Children Homes – In Kathmandu HFTN runs 3 homes for young people who have been orphaned through civil war, poverty and disease.
- SEED (Something to Eat very Day) Project and Training – Goat raising, natural pig farming, organic farming, aquaculture, hydroponics, crafts, SEED training, community health training etc.
- Infrastructure Development and Appropriate Technology – Bio-sand water filter, brick making, water supplies and sanitation, building projects
- Liaison and development with local Nepalese Churches
What would we be doing?
Some achievable small scale development tasks are presently being planned – this in part would be determined by the skills present within the team. Teaching and interacting with the children and youth of HFTN, befriending local people, being flexible, open and looking for ways to serve.
Why?
There are many reasons. Such an experience changes your perspective on how you view the world. We are looking at taking people who will be the leaders of the church for the next generation. It is important to gain insight into this global community in which live. As Christians we are called to serve and learn from others who materially have so little, but in many ways are so rich.
Who?
Young men and women associated with the PCANZ aged from 18-30. The group will be limited in size to 6 people (Ken Williams + 5 others).
When?
Late November – Early December for a duration of 2 ½ to 3 weeks. Final dates will be determined in the near future – dependent on final NCEA and Uni. exams at the end of the year.
Leadership
The team will be led by Rev. Ken Williams (Senior Minister, Wairau Presbyterian, Blenheim). Ken led a team of 5 young people to Nepal with HFTN in December 07 and this is seen as a continuing phase of the relationship.
Preparation
Successful applicants would need to ensure they are physically fit and in good general health. There would also be a need to gather for a weekend (most likely in Blenheim) at date that is yet to be determined.
Costs
The earlier tickets are purchased the lower costs will be, so it is not possible to give a definitive cost at this point. If tickets could be purchased before June airfares should be under $2500. Group costs and travel while in Nepal will be in the region of $600. On a case by case basis some funding may be available through the Global Mission Office.
