Reformed and reforming
The Moderator theme chosen by the Right Rev Dr Graham Redding is “reformed and reforming.” Graham plans to explore with the Church what it means to be part of the reformed tradition in our New Zealand context today, within a multi-faith environment that lacks the denominational boundaries of the past. “To be reminded of some of the theological foundations of our tradition is a timely thing,” he says.
Graham describes “reformed and reforming ” as being about the foundations of Presbyterianism as well as its ongoing engagement with change. It is, he says, an appropriate time to consider what being Presbyterian means. “What makes us distinctive and defines us?”
Graham says that “reformed and reforming” raises questions of identity and direction. Decline in the numbers going to church has lead to greater focus on mission and restructuring of the way we do things, which also raises theological questions. “It’s not so much about answers; it’s about touching base with some of the theological ramifications.” For example, he says, the concept of sola scriptura, or Scripture alone, has informed generations of Presbyterian thought. “What does that mean?” In Calvin’s time, he says, tradition was seen as also having an important role to play. “How do we understand the role Scripture plays in our church?”
“Reformed and reforming” theme is not about change for the sake of change, Graham says. “We need to make sure we’re not being blown by the winds of fashion but by the core convictions that are theologically informed.”
