Top 10 - Matt Chapman

- Matt Chapman
Top 10 is a regular column by Mary-Jane Konings where guests pick their favourites in entertainment, media and leisure activities.
Matt Chapman plays rhythm guitar for DETOUR, a band with a mission to build the Kingdom of God through music. They released their first, self titled album at Parachute Music Festival this year which became the best selling album of the weekend. You'll also hear Matt on backing vocals. Matt is studying at Bible College and looking to go back into pastoral ministry in the future.
MJ: Can you explain about the Clevedon connection?
Matt: I grew up in Clevedon and the local minister is my father, Mark Chapman, so I went there of course and I was also the youth worker for two years. I fully love the church out there, the people are fantastic. It's wonderful to be part of such a loving community. At the moment I help out with the youth group when I can, which is cool because it's really where my heart is, reaching people for God and the kids are great.
MJ: What is your favourite way to chill out and relax?
Matt: Playing cricket or touch rugby with the guys from church! It's great! I'd rather watch myself play sport on the tele but I don't think it's gonna happen. I really love playing it though I'm no Jeff Wilson - one day maybe.
MJ: Read any good books lately?
Matt: The bible's been pretty fantastic. Nothing else at the mo.
MJ: Are you listening to a favourite band or song at the moment?
Matt: One band I really like at the mo is 'Everyone day'. They're a younger band who are fantastic and great guys too. Every time I hear them play, I feel uplifted in some way. That's a cool thing to do to an audience I reckon.
MJ: Where is your fav place to eat and why?
Matt: At home for family dinner with mum, dad, John, Si and Fran coz family dinners are the best!
MJ: What is your consuming passion?
Matt: Being part of seeing people come to know God and living in loving fellowship with one another.
MJ: Is there a great website you recommend to others?
Matt: Yup, www.detourtheband.com of course. Also check out www.cyg.org.nz - have you registered yet?
MJ: What's the best movie you've seen recently?
Matt: I saw 'Whale Rider' the other day - that was awesome!
MJ: Where do you feel closest to God?
Matt: In a lifestyle of close contact with Him. When I'm having regular quiet times and I usually pop out to the beach. It's just a great place to go.
MJ: What about outdoor stuff? Do you have a favourite outside location or activity that gets you out into the great NZ outdoors?
Matt: I take part in a furniture relocation group with Daniel Wood from my church. I find this gets me out there and into the great outdoors whilst at the same time working. We are blessed to live in such a beautiful country!
