Fashionable Night for Op Shop Anniversary

It was a night to remember for Dunedin's Opportunity Shop on September 30 as fashionable items went on auction to a packed Dunedin Village Rialto.

The Op Shop Strut was held as a fundraiser to mark its 30th anniversary in the community it serves.

Over 100 items went across the catwalk from 55 designers including Fieke Newmann and Vita Cochran. This was complemented by artwork created by Simon Kaan, Inge Doesburg, Janet de Wagt and others.

Dunedin-born comedian Pinky Agnew compered the evening while silent bidding was conducted under auctioneer Warwick Grimmer.

Presbyterian Support Services communications and fundraising director Kathy Young says the evening generated great public interest in the months leading up to the event. Sponsorship was obtained from Pub Charity and tickets sold out a week in advance.

"We had clothes which were off the rack and for all shapes and sizes. Our theme was 'Real Clothes for Real People'," she says.

Kathy says between $7,000 and $9,000 was raised during the night, after deducting contributions towards the artists.

The Op Shop Strut was a tribute to everyone involved with the shop over 30 years, she says.

"It's only been possible due to the volunteers, the donors and shoppers."
