Top 10 - Helen Harray and Richard Dawson

Top 10 is a regular column by Mary-Jane Konings where guests pick their favourites in entertainment, media and leisure activities.

Helen Harray and Richard Dawson are the people behind 'student soul', a cafe church for the 23 000 uni and poly students in Dunedin - not that they all come at the same time. On Sunday nights, you'll find them in the Union Common Room next to the university cafe. With the assistance of a student team, this intrepid pair help Dunedin scarfies to connect with God by any means possible including multi media, discussion, worship and a cool logo. This is a "but who are these two really and what do they do in their spare time?" Let's ask the hard questions.

MJ: Exactly what is the idea with 'student soul'?

Richard: This started with renewed vision in the mid nineties, with a group of people who saw the potential for something fresh in student ministry. We realised that we needed to start a church which reflected the values of the Presbyterian student ministry. A team approach is part of that.

Helen: I am passionate about helping the church take a shift from being so auditory focused to valuing the visual and the interactive as well and to learning how to connect to God in a much more real way. And we want to help students coming to Dunedin to study to get connected in. We really welcome their leadership and involvement with open arms. Students can contact us beforehand or when they arrive during Orientation at the Christian tent.

MJ: What is the best thing about working together?

Helen: I think it's great to be stretched theologically when Richard and I plan services and definitely being a team is a major plus.

MJ: Seen any good movies lately? Or is there a great book you are currently enjoying?

Richard: I enjoy the Star Wars series that is quite different from the films.

Helen: I've watched heaps of movies this year because we use movies as starting points in 'student soul' services. What a great job! I find so many movies have a spiritual theme running through them, like the opening of 'Les Miserables'has a wonderful scene about grace in action.

My all time favourite movies usually have Robin Williams or Julia Roberts or Tom Hanks in them. Hollywood Jesus is a great site for reviewing and getting ideas.

MJ: Favourite band/artist/music genre?

Richard: I enjoy a large variety of music from classical to pop and hip hop etc. I really like the stuff coming from the 'Belfast Revival.' It's simple and good to sing and congregations pick it up quickly.

Helen: I think Parachute Band is awesome.
