The Ministers and Ruling Elders of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand, elected as representative members of the General Assembly, together with associate and observer members, convened pursuant to the appointment of the General Assembly meeting at Christchurch, 5 July 1998.

The Assembly was welcomed by representatives of the tangata whenua.

The Right Rev Bruce Hansen, outgoing Moderator of the General Assembly, by prayer constituted the Assembly in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, the only King and Head of the Church, and conducted public worship.

The Assembly Executive Secretary moved and it was seconded:

[00.002] That pursuant to the nomination of the 1998 General Assembly the Reverend Robert Morrison Yule be elected Moderator of the General Assembly to hold office until the election and induction of his successor at the next ordinary meeting of the Assembly.
The motion was carried.

The Moderator of the 1998 Assembly inducted the Reverend Robert Yule by prayer. The Moderator and Clerk of Te Aka Puaho presented Mr Yule with the Moderator's Korowai. Mr Yule signed the Centennial Bible.

The Moderator addressed the Assembly on the theme 'The Power of Hope - a better day coming'.

The Sacrament of Holy Communion was celebrated.

The Assembly adjourned to meet again at 2.00 pm, Sunday 1 October 2000 at the Dunedin College of Education.

The Moderator pronounced the benediction.

In the evening, Commissioners and guests joined in a banquet, and viewed "A Piece of Cake", a play which told the story of how the northern and southern churches joined to form the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand.

On the morning of Sunday 1 October members of Assembly dispersed to worship in local congregations.
