Reports from Policy Groups began Monday morning.

Reports were received from Te Aka Puaho and Council of Assembly.

Shirley Ferguson Convenor of the Council of Assembly presented the background to the 'Strengthening Presbyteries' paper.

Assembly 2002 has set a timetable for consultation and report back on the prospect of the Presbyterian Church moving to larger Presbyteries.

Shirley Fergusson comments that she is encouraged by the generally positive response to the need for presbyteries to take seriously their role in supporting congregations in local mission.

Rev Prof Nestor Miguez from Argentina led the Assembly in Bible Study before lunch.

This afternoon's reports included Overseas Mission, CCANZ and the reception of Memorial 1. Assembly not to appoint a Sessional Committee to consider Memorial One. Brought to the Assembly by Wellington Presbytery it sought clarification on issues relating to "the effect of all rulings and binding decisions of the General Assembly 1985 - 2000 on the matter of presentation of gay people as candidates for ordination studies." Voting on this notice of motion was 131 FOR (40.3%) and 198 AGAINST (59.7%). Failing to have 60% vote either way, the notice of motion lies on the table and is likely to lapse at the end of this Assembly. The Moderator commented that the vote seemed to indicate the majority of members of the Assembly were looking to have time and give their energy to matter that will enhance the Church in its mission.

Meet Mrs Dorothy Thawley, who was interviewed by the Assembly media team.

The Assembly is pleased to have President of the Uniting Church of Australia President Rev Dr James Haire attending Assembly. Read his interview with the media team.

The Very Rev Rob Yule gave an farewell address as retiring Moderator.
