Coldplay - 'A Rush of Blood to the Head'

Reviewed by Jono Ryan

If any of this year's releases carried a burden of expectation, it would be this sequel to Coldplay's highly acclaimed 'Parachutes'. Those who were mesmerized by the seamless textured arrangements of their debut, containing the vulnerable yet extraordinarily athletic voice of Chris Martin should not be disappointed. It's a great album. Their overpowering sense of resignation is now a little more deliberate, enforced by driving rhythms and subtle string parts. Thematically there is a stronger underlying political message, and as the title suggests, parodies a foolhardiness so prevalent in society. Another very emotive recording, which seems to linger long after it finishes playing.

Various - 'Loop Select 003'

The third compilation from local Loop label since the demise of its magazine, 'Select 003' is undoubtedly the best so far, and one of the most agreeable selections of current local talent released this year. Blending drum and bass, dub, reggae and hiphop with electronic textures, both discs showcase the breadth and quality of NZ music at the moment. Label buddies Rhian Sheehan, the Black Seeds and Ebb feature tracks, alongside other local favourites Mark de Clive-Lowe, Che Fu, Pitch Black and Trinity Roots. While a number of these tracks have already been released in NZ, 'Select 003' has an ambassadorial role as Loop's first UK/Europe release, and as such will showcase a collection of artistic expression of which we can be proud.
