Solving Summer

by Reg Weeks

How to solve the riddle of competing family expectations for the summer holidays! That's quite a challenge when the kids want excitement and adventure, teenagers want to tramp the high hills, Dad thinks a bit of quiet fishing would be good and all Mum wants to do is lie on a beach and soak up the sun. And a little bit of mental stimulation might be good. Well try this for a solution.

Take a moment to think about the possibility of some entertaining morning exchanges with a world famous bio-ethicist, or delving into the question of where compassion fits into the 21st century AND enjoying the afternoons basking in Lake Wanaka's beautiful sunshine. Dream about spending an evening grooving to the beat of a Backhouse-inspired black gospel group AND exploring the adventure tourism opportunities of this small piece of paradise. That's the vision of the fledgling Aspiring Faith Community, birthed by the Upper Clutha Presbyterian Parish.

A week-long Summer School in the local Mount Aspiring College is the result a lively forum of input and discussion that will have challenge and relevance to the issues people are facing in today's world.

The keynote speaker will be Prof Gareth Jones of the Otago Medical School, who will offer a track on bio-ethics and theology called "Playing God - exploring the boundaries between the human and Divine control"

A creative dimension will be provided by 'Main Impro' a dynamic young Christian drama group from Dunedin. Their workshops help churches use drama to build links with contemporary human experience. 'Sunny Side Up' a Dunedin based a'cappella Black Gospel group are guaranteed to provide a lively evening's entertainment and participation.

And US minister Rev Jim Symons will lead a track on 'Compassion in the 21st century,' touching base with a rich range of biblical perspectives. To register contact: Peter Marshall, 18 Rata St, Wanaka. Ph 03 443 1090, email pete.marshall@xtra.co.nz
