Top 10 - Simon Greening

Top 10 is a regular column by Mary-Jane Konings where guests pick their favourites in entertainment, media and leisure activities.

Simon Greening has been working with Youth for Christ in Auckland for over five years. As the national 'The Rock' Coordinator, he oversees programmes in about 50 high schools throughout the country from Whangarei to Dunedin. He reckons the best part of his job is going into high schools and motivating young people to believe big dreams for their schools.

MJ: What is your favourite way to chill out and relax?

Simon: I love coffee, cricket and going to movies with mates. And I also enjoy going fishing with my Dad and little bro. And reading books.

MJ: Read any good books lately?

Simon: I am currently reading a book called 'Tipping Point'. It's very good, I picked it up from Whitcoulls just recently. Another book I am reading is 'The Tale of Three Kings'. It's an old book, but great to read.

MJ: Are you listening to a favourite band or song at the moment?

Simon: I love Delirous, definitely a band with the 'X' factor. I am listening to a song by the 'New Radicals' called 'You Only Get What you Give'. It's a great song talking about the music that each one of has inside of us, the ability to do great things and not give up in the face of opposition.

MJ: Enough soul food, what about nourishing the inner man. Where is your favourite place to eat ?

Simon: Memphis Belle in Christchurch. My friends Chrisof and Jane Zintl took me there and it changed my life.

MJ: Life changing food? Tell me about more!

Simon: It's not big on hype and heaps of advertising, it just makes great gourmet pizza!

MJ: Would you rather play sport or watch it on the telly?

Simon: Definitely play it. I've played heaps of soccer, plus indoor and outdoor cricket. I 'm not into rugby, it just doesn't do it for me. My Dad's English, so my brothers and I grew up with soccer as the winter game.

MJ: Is there a great website you recommend to others?

Simon: www.yfc.org.nz

MJ: You're kidding! For entertainment and leisure? Let's try the movies. Seen anything brilliant lately?

Simon: I would definitely rate 'The Man who Sued God'. Great movie, if you can get over the fact that it was made by Aussies. Also loved 'A Beautiful Mind.' Russell Crowe I think, is a brilliant actor, and 'Ice Age' is right up there in my opinion.

MJ: Finally, where do you feel closest to God?

Simon: I've never been a huge outdoor guy, but the odd escape to the outdoors reminds me of the hugeness of God. The Bible says that God speaks through His creation. I've found that to be true in my life.

MJ: Do you have a favourite location ?

Simon: I like the city. But I also enjoy the odd trip into New Zealand's bush, I've done a few tramps with my family to places like Abel Tasman and the Routeburn in the South Island.
