The Best New Parachute Releases

by Jono Ryan

Paul Colman Trio 'Turn'
Parachute, $34.95 (2000)

Like last year, PC3 presented again a powerful combination of great songs, a good sense of humour, and a superb live act, ensuring that their powerful message can't be ignored.

Delirious 'Deeper: the D:finitive Worship'
Furious? (Parachute), $36.95 (2001)

'Deeper' is a sort of "best-of-so-far" two disc album that captures much of the Delirious experience at P2002. Big stadium rock moments sit back to back with intimate acoustic worship tracks, with material spanning their career to date.

Earthsuit 'Kaleidoscope Superior'
Sparrow (Parachute), $34.95 (2000)

A high energy set on the mainstage saw an awesome audience response for this US act. An extremely eclectic sound: one part Rage Against The Machine, one part Daftpunk, and one part Talking Heads... check the album out.

Elevator 'Music'
Parachute, $34.95 (2000)

Their mesmerising performances are captured well on CD. NZ's own take on UK acts like Portishead and Lamb, Elevator are creating some great new trip-hop sounds.

Form 'Follow'
Parachute, $34.95 (2001)

The Sunday Night Worship spot at Parachute was a great night, and Form really set the standard. Their latest album features some fantastic new tracks, equally powerful on the Mainstage as on your discman.

Blair Giles 'Under the Ice'
Soul Purpose (Parachute), $34.95 (2001)

P2002 saw Blair's final gig with the Wellington ensemble that recorded this album, and it was a pretty special set. Check out this album for Blair's unique songwriting style, poetic lyricism, and adventurous vocal harmonies.

The Lads 'Marvel'
Parachute, $34.95 (2001)

The Lads always put on a great show at Parachute, and this year was no exception. Crowd reactions to the performance of their latest single 'Creator' seems to indicate that 'Marvel' will be a favourite for a while yet.

Derek Lind 'Salvo: Songs 1995-2000'
Somewhere, $34.95 (2001)

If you attended either of Derek's sets at P2002, you will understand why this is here, as they both contained some very precious moments. He is a very gifted artist, and a veteran of Christian songwriting in NZ.

Lole 'Samoana Soul'
King Distribution, $34.95 (2000)

Possibly one of the funkiest gigs at the festival, this solo artist from Ma-v-elle had it "going on". Her album is a great mix of Pacific, R'n'B, and soul, and is well worth a listen.

Chris Mason-Battley 'Unspoken'
Parachute, $36.95 (2001)

One of the few jazz acts at Parachute this year, Chris and his group led the way for local instrumental acts. Their sets contained a pleasing blend of acoustic, fusion and acid jazz sounds, as does his latest two-disc release 'Unspoken'.
