Niuean First

Rev Ere Talangi-Ikitoelangi

Ere Talagi-Ikitoelagi is the first Pacific Island Niuean to be appointed as sole minister to a multicultural parish by the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand. Ere was appointed to Knox Presbyterian Church in Parnell in October 2001. This is a parish whose number of attending members has shown signs of growth, with services in both English and in Niuean.

For Ere, this work is in her blood, she was born on the Island of Niue into a family of many ministers who have served within the church over several generations. It was this heritage which inspired her to enter the ministry even though it was not traditional for her, being a woman, to do so. Yet she obeyed God's call for her life which she says was both clear and strong.

"This ministry" says Ere "is both a challenge and a privilege. I admire very much the fact that the Niueans of the parish decided to appoint a woman and how open minded they were to explore this. They have a great respect for the position of a 'minister' and have therefore respected me firstly as a minister, with the fact that I am a woman being secondary to this."

Ere's vision is for a church of all ages, while focusing on the children and youth ministries. She also seeks to encourage women to reach their full potential in the parish she serves as well as in the wider church.

Ere is actively supported by her husband Don Ikitoelagi and their eight children.
