Welcome Children to Worship

Exciting ministry with children is happening in Presbyterian churches throughout New Zealand. Although many congregations bemoan the lack of children in worship or Sunday learning programmes there are still many that have a lively children's ministry, yet not always on Sunday. In my recent surveys and discussions in ten different presbyteries it is clear that there are many great stories to share and they will be shared through this sPanz Learning page. There is also frustration, disappointment, exhaustion and some apathy but not all in the same places.
The common denominator in successful ministry with children and families seems to be keen enthusiasts willing to give their time and energy. A wide variety of programmes are offered: those that succeed have the key factors of relating really well to whatever age group is catered for, are probably fast-moving and varied, and require energy on the part of the leaders. For some a key to success is the particular process or method of a learning programme and not necessarily the content.
A common experience nationwide is that many congregations have between 2 and 12 children attending worship on any Sunday. This makes planning very difficult. Yet perhaps the most helpful thing any congregation can do is to develop a welcoming attitude and befriend children when they do come, help them feel they belong and involve them in the service. Occasional family services are a great success for some parishes.
Yet there are many congregations where no children come to worship. Society has changed: where children do attend in larger numbers it may be because there is little local competition from other activities. I encourage all congregations to assess what is possible in your ministry with children and families. Work with what you have, not just with a yearning for the large Sunday schools of the past.
Successful ministry also happens in holiday programmes, indoors or day camps after school care, weekday activities, pre-school music, family nights. Creativity, imagination and inspiration develop ministry opportunities.
