b 17.5.1834 Slains Aberdeen Scotland
w Mary Jane Veitch b Edinburgh 8.6.1849 m 18.12.1868 d 26.2.1908 at Dunedin
He was licensed by the Free Church Presbytery of Edinburgh 1868;
Ordained as Missionary to the New Hebrides in St Cuthberts (Free Church) Edinburgh 26.11.1868;
The first Missionary of the Presbyterian Synod of Otago & Southland;
Vvaledictory service in Dunedin before leaving for New Hebrides (Vanuatu) 10.6.1869;
Arr in the New Hebrides 16.8.1869.
After a stay of some months on other islands he settled on Nguna on 19.7.1870.
He had an apostolic ministry there; progress from 1883-90 was very remarkable.  First fruits
came in 1875; the number of Communicants grew from 40 in 1883 to 800 in 1890, of whom 433
were admitted in 1889; the marked increase came  following a period of fierce tribal warfare,
which proved to be a turning point.   In 1895 heathenism ended on Nguna;  the Church was
enlarged to seat 600.
His wife returned to Dunedin, New Zealand c.1908 to gather together her scattered family
who were generally in New Zealand for schooling and with the hope that her husband would
retire and return to New Zealand. Sending children away for schooling or leaving them behind
in New Zealand was always a source of much sadness for Missionary Mothers.
Unfortunately, after re-uniting her family, Mary Jane Milne fell ill and died in Dunedin Feb 1908.
(Interred in the Northern Cemetery Dunedin)
He translated the Scriptures into Ngunese and it was reported to the General Assembly in 1912

He was Father of Rev  W.V. Milne, Dr Peter Milne (Jnr), Mrs Isobel Riddle, Dr D.S. Milne of Wellington.
On a tablet erected by the people of Nguna in his memory is the inscription -
"When he came to Nguna there were no Christians; when he died there were no heathen."
He retired 31.12.1916, but continued to live on the island of Nguna with his son and daughter in law.

China 12.11.1911.
‘Own Missionary’ of Stirling ClP.
During his service in South China, Hazel used her talents as a teacher in the educational program
established there. In 9.1915 Peter was compelled to go on furlough on account of his health, and he
resigned from 31.12.1915.
Feeling that a Medical qualification would be of more benefit, he studied medicine at Otago University
with Hazel working as a Teacher to support them both. After qualifying, he joined the British Medical
Administration in Kenya, living there with Hazel until about 6 years before his retirement.
Upon their return to New Zealand, Peter was appointed the Medical Superintendent at the Seacliff
Psychiatric Hospital near Dunedin. Three years later he moved to the Waitati Hospital between
Seacliff and Dunedin. After retirement, Peter and Hazel moved to Roslyn in Dunedin, Hazel continuing
her interest in adult literacy. A significant bequest was given to the New Hebrides (Vanuatu) after Peter's
death to be used for Educational purposes in memory of the Mission work carried out there by his
Father and Mother. With Hazel's blessing this money was used to build a Girls’ Hostel at Onesua High
School and named the Milne Memorial Hostel.

Nguna, New Hebrides (Vanuatu) arrived 4.1905 as Assistant to his Father until Father’s death in 1924; then in
charge of station. Being born on the island he was regarded by the natives as one of themselves, man-Nguna,
and they gave him their implicit trust. He was a skilled boatman and he had a good working knowledge of
medicine (gained from some instruction at the Medical School Dunedin).
He was a teacher and pastor as familiar with the native language as with English; he revised and expanded the
Hymn Book, not a few composed, or translated by himself. To his fellow missionaries he was a loyal friend and
sagacious counsellor.
Moderator of the New Hebrides Mission Synod 1921.
‘....The tremendous influence that his personality exerted over both natives and Europeans during his 32 years
as a Missionary in the Nguna district can never be expressed.  For the natives, perhaps it is best shown by the
manner in which he was always accepted, as a matter of course, as their refuge in time of trouble.  They had
only to tell him and he would immediately begin to set it right, and he had the amazing gift of being able to
bring right out of almost any wrong, clearness from confusion, and happiness from strife and sorrow.  He and
everyone else, took is as a matter of course that he would do his utmost for everyone.
‘The effect of all these things is summed up sincerely and significantly in a letter written by one who was his
nearest white neighbour for 10 yrs - a French trader.  He said - “By his kindness, his greatness of  ideas, he was
my refuge and the balance of my acts.
He was an Englishman, myself a Frenchman.  Between us, we were only men, without any distinction of nationality.
After 54 yrs of my life, the sweetest remembrance is attached to the name of my dear William Milne.  In the illness,
in the sorrow always, they were near us, always so kind and encouraging.”
The fruits are plentiful. .... He met his death in yet another attempt to help his people in trouble, going out
fearlessly and without hesitation.  Tragic though it was, it was a brave end to a life that may well stand as an
inspiration in our Church.’ (Basil Nottage).
Murdered by an insane native at Nguna 27.4.1937
Interred in the Christian Cmetery on Nguna Island.
