Moderator’s Christmas Message 2009

Christmas pageants are so much more captivating when there’s a real baby cast as the infant Jesus. The ‘cute’ factor has us on the edge of our seats.

Perhaps that helps explain the tendency for Christmas to overshadow Easter nowadays. There’s nothing cute about the Crucifixion, nor the Resurrection for that matter.

Sadly, for many of us, the Easter faith has given way to a Christmas faith – a kind of nostalgic longing for an eternal season of cheer and goodwill that turns Santa and the baby Jesus into cultural bedfellows. Santa parade one day, nativity play the next. Christmas stockings and Advent calendars side by side. Christianity lite.

One of my favourite Christmas readings is the following piece by Ann Weems, called The Cross in the Manger (from her book, “Reaching for Rainbows”). I’ve used it often in worship. It’s as relevant now as it was when it was written almost thirty years ago.

If there is no cross in the manger,
there is no Christmas.

If the Babe doesn’t become the Adult,
there is no Bethlehem star.

If there is no commitment in us,
there are no wise men searching.

If we offer no cup of cold water,
there is no gold, no frankincense, no myrrh.

If there is no praising God’s name,
there are no angels singing.

If there is no spirit of alleluia,
there are no shepherds watching.

If there is no standing up, no speaking out, no risk,
there is no Herod, no flight into Egypt.

If there is no room in our inn,
then “Merry Christmas” mocks the Christ Child,
and the Holy Family is just a holiday card,
and God will loathe our feats and festivals.

For if there is no reconciliation,
we cannot call Christ “Prince of Peace.”

If there is no goodwill towards others,
it can all be packed away in boxes for another year.

If there is no forgiveness in us,
there is no cause for celebration.

If we cannot go even now unto Golgotha,
there is no Christmas in us.

If Christmas is not now,

If Christ is not born into the everyday present,

then what is all the noise about?

May true Advent longing and the full reality of Easter inform and enliven your Christmas celebrations this year.

Grace and peace,
Graham

Moderator’s Christmas Message 2009 in Korean:

World Council of Churches' General Secretary's Christmas message 2009

He is the image of the invisible God,
the firstborn of all creation;
for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created,
things visible and invisible,
whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers –
all things have been created through him and for him.
He himself is before all things,
and in him all things hold together.

Colossians 1:15-17 (NRSV)

Light is the radiant image of God’s goodness, in creation and at Christmas. The Creator commands, “Let there be light!”1 – and the universe takes form. At the nativity of Christ, light breaks forth in the midst of darkness – and the darkness can never overcome this glowing testament of the living God.2

Christmas is a season to sing praises,3 yet in our time the reality of environmental destruction undermines the doxology of creation. The singing of the spheres is obscured by pollution and manufactured noise, the rhythms of the sea are disturbed by climate change, the beauty of many manifestations of life is disfigured by abusive practices rooted in greed. And as the earth suffers, so must its inhabitants. Already, the poor and other socially marginalized people find it ever more difficult to lift their voices in song.

In the days of Mary and Joseph, the emperor Augustus believed power rested in his hands alone. He decreed that “all the world” (the biblical word is oikoumene)4 should be taxed, and an obscure couple made their way toward Bethlehem. Yet God had another purpose in history, and now we realize that thrones, dominions, rulers and authorities were acting unwittingly in fulfillment of prophetic imperatives. It is Christ, not the emperor, who is truly “before all things, and in him all things hold together”.5

Biblical scholar Barbara Rossing suggests that the old, imperial oikoumene of Caesar – along with modern economic, military and political empires – is perishing. Yet the prophets and apostles assure us that God’s creation – a true oikoumene comprising the household of God – will be transformed.6

And so we pray for change and offer ourselves as instruments of transformation.7 We live in faith that, in the coming of Jesus Christ, there is a new creation in which the hope of the angels’ song comes to fruition – God, humanity and all of life shall be reconciled.8

World Council of Churches' General Secretary's Christmas message 2009 in Korean: 2009
