Director of Faith & Order WCC - applications close 23 September

The WCC is looking for a Director of Faith and Order, based in Geneva, to be responsible for coordinating all related activities, in close collaboration with the WCC governing bodies, members of the Faith and Order Commission, the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity as well as counterparts in member Churches and other ecumenical organizations.

At ease both in an international working environment and with the values and mission of the Council, the Director of Faith and Order will assume the following responsibilities:

  • To coordinate and actively participate in a wide range of studies approved by the Faith and Order Commission and address theological, social and historical factors related to the unity of the churches.
  • To follow debates in member churches and among ecumenical partners on church unity, and collect and assess information on relevant decisions and developments in this field with particular attention to the different contexts of contemporary global Christianity.
  • To encourage and accompany member churches and ecumenical partners in their theological and ecclesiological reflection, addressing fundamental issues related to the unity of the churches and the continuing sources of division among and within them, and the renewal of methods to address them.
  • To promote, communicate and interpret the work of Faith and Order to member churches and ecumenical partners.
  • To contribute to ecumenical formation at the Ecumenical Institute as required.
  • To contribute to the meetings of the Permanent Committee on Consensus and Collaboration, the Joint Working Group between the Roman Catholic Church and the WCC, the Conference of Secretaries of the Christian World Communions, and the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
  • To be a credible and effective advocate for the cause of Christian unity, for Faith and Order and for the WCC, through publications and presentations to churches, faculties and in other venues.

Qualifications and special requirements:

  • Postgraduate (minimum PhD degree) in a related field of theology.
  • Minimum five years of experience and a strong track record in project management,
  • preferably in an international, ecumenical and/or church-related environment.
  • Ability to represent, interpret and communicate the positions of the WCC to member
  • churches and other ecumenical partners.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English. Knowledge of other WCC working languages (Spanish, French, and/or German) is an asset.
  • Sensitivity to multicultural and ecumenical settings with respect to gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability and age diversity.
  • Ready to travel extensively (more than 20 days per year).
