I write this pastoral letter conscious that all of us have followed the Pike River mining situation as it has unfolded, and have grappled with the sudden end that arrived with the second explosion. As we have watched, we have been conscious of the stress on all those directly involved. Now they grapple with the confirmation of the loss of life. No doubt you have been praying for them. I thank you for that and encourage you to continue.

Christian World Service has launched an emergency appeal for Indonesia following two catastrophic events. A 3 metre tsunami struck West Sumatra on 25 October following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake on the same faultline that caused the disastrous 2004 Indian ocean tsunami.
