Mrs Helen J Smaill (nee Grant) joined the New Hebrides Mission on Epi when she married Rev T Smaill in 1890. After the death of Rev Smaill in 1902 she returned to New Zealand before returning to Epi in 1903 to act as housekeeper and assistant for Rev TE Riddle. She finally returned to New Zealand in 1906.
Included in this file is : copies
of personal correspondence; and transcriptions prepared by Helen Smaill
of extracts of letters written by Rev Thomas Smaill and/or Helen Smaill
of events, customs and observations on Epi (1890 to 1902) and extracts
from Prof. Drummond's diary describing arrival of Rev and Mrs Smaill on
Epi in 1890. These extracts were used by Rev A Don in his book "Light
in Dark Isles" in 1918.
