Nominating Committee

What is the purpose of the Nominating Commitee?

The task of the nominating committee is to seek nominations for General Assembly committees, task groups and the position of Moderator. Our task is to find the best qualified and skilled people to serve the Church and we need your help to do this.

Why have a Nominating Committee?

The Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand’s reformed heritage is expressed in its organizational structure and operational practice. The church's prime asset is its people, along with their skills and expertise. By having the Nominating Committee, the General Assembly eliminates the need for complex and time-consuming regional and local electoral processes as it seeks the best possible people to serve the church.

How is the Nominating Committee's membership determined?

Nominating Committee is made up of representatives from every Presbytery and Uniting Church Council, plus a representative from Te Aka Puaho, Pacific Islanders’ Synod and APW. Each group is asked to nominate two people so that the committee has some choice and can balance the membership as much as possible, including in relation to gender and maintaining a lay/clergy and theological balance. The proposed list of members is then approved by the Resource Sub-committee. In this way the church tries to ensure that all points of view are represented in this group.

How long do people serve on the committee for?

Apart from the co-conveners, who serve for four years, the term of appointment is from Assembly to Assembly.
