The Northern Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand supports 74 Presbyterian churches across Auckland and Northland. With our current Executive Officer’s departure after nine years in the role, we are seeking an experienced leader who can provide servant leadership, serving the Presbytery in fulfilling its vision and achieving its priorities going forward. This demands sound judgement and practical leadership in helping the Presbytery respond creatively to a changing church and community environment through the development of new ministries and church plants.
This is a significant role in a diverse Presbytery, working with the Moderator and Presbytery Council across congregations of different sizes, cultures, theological outlooks and stages of ministry. The Executive Officer will need to be adaptable, innovative, relationally strong, able to remain steady when situations are complex or views are strongly held and to lead a team who are committed and hard working.
We are looking for someone who can:
• Exercise strategic judgement — think ahead, identify emerging issues, offer options and help Council navigate change without imposing a personal agenda.
• Turn decisions into action — take ownership, follow matters through and ensure that work is completed in taking responsibility for the operations of the Presbytery.
• Lead through relationships and influence — build trust across cultural, theological and organisational differences and work constructively through issues as they arise.
• Combine accountability with collaboration — maintain sound governance, systems and processes while enabling others to contribute and take responsibility.
The role reports to Presbytery Council through the Moderator and works closely with Regional Convenors, ministers, elders, congregations, and other church leaders. It includes responsibility for supporting Presbytery strategy, governance, operations, financial stewardship, communication, administration and compliance.
You may have developed your leadership experience within the Church or in another sector. We are interested in people who bring senior leadership and organisational capability, experience working with boards or governance structures, strong communication and relationship-building skills, applying a values-based approach marked by integrity, service and respect.
At the heart of the role is a commitment to the mission of the Church. You will need to work credibly within Presbyterian governance and shared leadership and be willing to understand and work within PCANZ’s Book of Order and wider structures.
