Presbyterians reject that earthquakes are ‘divine punishment’

Fri 18 Nov 2016

At its General Assembly in Dunedin today the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand rejected the view that natural disasters, including the recent earthquakes, are a form of divine punishment.

The Presbyterian Church expressed its “prayerful solidarity” with all those affected by the civil emergencies which have resulted from the current earthquake and storm disasters.

Right Rev Richard Dawson, the new Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand, said that the Church believes that Jesus suffers with all those who suffer; that Jesus offers to all compassion, transformation and hope.

“Our churches in North Canterbury, Marlborough and Wellington have been deeply affected by these disasters. They are supporting, and being supported by, their communities. Under these difficult circumstances they are embracing hope over fear. To hear unhelpful statements at this time, such as natural disasters are a form of divine punishment, is distressing and unnecessary. Let’s reach out and help our neighbours. Lift them up do not put them down. Be compassionate and generous. There is enough love and hope to go around.”
