The Holy Spirit at work …

In the beginning of creation, when God created heaven and earth. When the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. Genesis 1: 1-2.

The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him - the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. Isaiah 11:2.

When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. Psalm 104: 30.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you,” taught Jesus. John 14: 26.

Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s spirit dwells in you. 1 Corinthians 3:16.

The creation of the Church is the working of the Holy Spirit. The Church is seen and understood as the Kingdom of God, coming down from heaven. Jesus prayed, “ Your Kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:10.

The Spirit of God is at work, in you, in your family, in your church community. Keep prayerful. Maintain worship. Be welcoming of all people. Fellowship as often as possible. Visit the sick. Uplift the broken hearted. Care for the least amongst you. Be strong in compassion and in the righteousness of God. Build up the body.

Selected verses and stories from the Bible. This helps us to keep on keeping on in the Lord. The Spirit is at work. Keep the faith and persevere on the good work of the Kingdom.

Entrust your church communities to the Holy Spirit. It is not a competition with other neighbouring churches. Allow the Spirit to move amongst you.  Applaud, support other churches when they flourish and are moved by the Spirit. We all belong to Jesus Christ.

The Holy Spirit is watching out for all people. To the glory and praise of God. Come Holy Spirit, move amongst us, as you will.

From the Assembly Executive Secretary

Dear friends and colleagues,

I am writing this a few days before Pentecost Sunday. The church of Pentecost is amazing. Any reading of Acts 2 paints a picture of a new community. It is a community with a strong hope filled message, a message about a resurrected Jesus; a community now empowered by the third person of the Trinity; a community of old and young, of dreams and vision, of all being gifted to serve.

It is a community with an invitation, “Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off – for all whom the Lord our God will call.” Acts 2:38-39.

How is this being played out in your community?

Emergency Assembly

An Emergency Assembly has been held electronically and agreed that in exceptional circumstances where it is impractical to hold a General Assembly which participants can attend in person, the Council of Assembly can determine that a General Assembly be held by electronic means. To give regulatory effect to this decision, the Emergency Assembly agreed that Book of Order section 14.29 is to be amended by the addition of a new clause providing for holding a General Assembly by electronic means. Book of Order section 14 is subject to the special legislative procedure, which means that the amendment to 14.29 cannot be finally adopted until presbyteries (including Te Aka Puaho) and church councils have considered and voted on it, and the next General Assembly has considered the proposal for a second time. Voting papers have been sent to presbyteries and parish councils and must be returned by 30 July 2021.

First round of voting for Moderator-designate

Parish councils will have submitted names for Moderator-designate to their presbyteries, and each presbytery now votes for two people from those nominated by its church councils. This process must be completed by 4 June. In early July, election packs will be sent to parish councils containing information about each of those nominated, together with voting instructions and a voting paper.

General Assembly 2021

The 2021 General Assembly will be held from 29 September - 3 October 2021 at St Andrew’s College in Christchurch.

Assembly is a time for us to learn, grow and celebrate our Church's life and mission. The Local Arrangements Committee will commence taking registrations from late June, and more information about how to register, fees, accommodation, ministers' training day and other details, will be available on a dedicated Assembly website.

Commissioners to Assembly

Pursuant to Book of Order 8.16 (1). A presbytery is responsible for the organisation of appointments of commissioners to attend the General Assembly (2). The selection of commissioners is to be based on the total number of full members of congregations within a presbytery, on a fair and reasonable basis. For every 100 members, a presbytery will commission one elder or minister and will allocate the commissions across the congregations within the presbytery. Presbytery clerks and administrators will be working to determine this process for appointing commissioners.

Deadline for reports, proposals and recommendations to be considered by General Assembly 2021

Following consultation with the Assembly Business Work Group convener, a deadline has been set for receiving all reports and proposals that will be considered by this year's General Assembly. All material must be received by 5pm Friday, 18 June 2021. This timeframe will enable us to facilitate a consultative process with presbyteries prior to Assembly. In this way, we will be able to fulfil the 2012 Assembly’s decision supporting presbyteries’ participation in the setting of the Assembly agenda.

Nominating committee

Presbyteries need to identify suitable people with the skills and ability to represent the breadth of our Church, to be selected for the nominations committee, which will meet prior to General Assembly. Nominating committee membership will be confirmed by Council of Assembly.

Staff news

Diane McKinstry resigned from her position as Associate Director of Presbyterian Children and Families Ministry. Her last day of work was 14 May 2021. Diane has decided to focus her time and energy on completing her theological studies. During her time, Diane brought energy, a fresh perspective, and a depth of knowledge to the Assembly Office. We thank Diane for serving the Church.

Calling a newly trained minister

This year another group will complete their training as interns. Profiles for each person are available from the Rev Brendon McRae who coordinates introductions and discussions between final-year interns and ministry settlement boards. For more information, please contact Brendon.

Police checks

A reminder about the requirements of those completing police checks. Please see details here. Applications that use old forms or are incomplete applications (such as no Application Form or identification documents) will be automatically returned as Assembly Office cannot process these applications.

Update your office bearer contacts

We use electronic communication to share information, update on important matters and pass on other news. Our office’s ability to do this is dependent on church councils advising updates to key contact people, changes in email etc. Please pass on any changes to Grace so that we can ensure we are communicating with the appropriate office bearers.

Thank you for your prayers and support. Take care.

Regional one-day Youth Ministry Leadership Training

It was announced at the beginning of the year that our flagship national youth ministry leaders conference Connect would not be happening this year due to the COVID threat. We said at the time we would be supplementing this void by hosting a number of online trainings, regional day gatherings and a Key Leaders’ Retreat in Queenstown at the end of the year.

Here are the dates and locations of the regional one-day youth ministry leaders’ gatherings, either being run by presbyteries or ecumenically, and supported by PYM:

  • 19 June – Auckland
  • 18-20 June – Christchurch
  • 19 June – Balclutha
  • 26 June – Tauranga
  • 3 July – Palmerston North

Connect is for anyone who is involved in youth ministry leadership, and for emerging leaders aged 17 years and over who come with a supervising adult. We encourage ministers and key youth leaders to bring their team. Find out information here

Online training series

We have now run two of the five 90 minute long Zoom-based training sessions we have planned for this year. It has been great to have so many people join us for these trainings. Here are the upcoming sessions:

  • 12 July, Intermediate Ministry Essentials.
  • 13 Sept, Transitioning well, moving on from Intermediate and High School.
  • 8 Nov, Helping parents win.

These are our provisional topics, we may change topics if circumstances require us to tackle another topic urgently. Find out more information here

Here are a few things to be aware of:

Gordon Fitch
National Youth Manager

Presbyterian Research Centre

In mid-May we held a very successful event in the Hewitson Library highlighting the breadth of our collections - not only pastoral theology and the books of the Bible, but also the nature of world Christianity; material about youth ministry and the evolving shape of the Church; works by contemporary theologians exploring topics like sexuality, on history, art and literature in NZ, Presbyterian history and more. People had the opportunity to hear about the collections and browse the shelves while enjoying wine and cheese.

Material is flooding into the Archives and space is getting very tight with quite a bit of juggling needed at times for our backlog of boxes. If you have a large quantity of records you would like to send to us, please let us know in advance so that we can arrange a temporary space for it before it arrives.

If you are not on any of our mailing lists and would like to receive emails from the Presbyterian Research Centre about new books, events, project updates or blog articles please sign up here.

“…who made the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the chambers of the south; who does great things beyond understanding, and marvelous things without number.” Job 9:9-10 (NRSV).

Matariki

The Matariki star cluster is mentioned three times in the Bible - twice in the Book of Job, and again in Amos 5:8. This year, Matariki celebrations commence on 19 June and continue to 11 July. We are encouraged to remember what has gone before; to think about the present and to look toward the future with hope. We have developed a one-page resource - which includes Bible readings, information, suggested reflections, a recommended read, a song and a link from Scripture Union NZ. Find it here

“5 Matters”

This month, we continue a series sharing the “5 ‘Matters’ of Children and Families Ministry”, written by Cheryl Harray (before her retirement in November 2020). These are Cheryl’s reflections and highly recommended resources. Here is the fourth ‘matter’:

4. All Ages Together Matter - Intergenerational Ministry - Psalm 78:1-7. Doing more TOGETHER is the other key challenge and focus of direction and resources in the 21st century. Research is showing that alongside INFORMATION, experiences that encourage FORMATION are needed for ALL ages to grow in faith as life-long followers of Jesus for TRANSFORMATION.

Faith is caught more than taught and is passed on best when churches ‘intentionally bring the generations together in mutual serving, sharing and learning in order to live out being the body of Christ to one another and the greater community’.

Global Mission

Unfortunately, much of our Global Mission news is very challenging...

Myanmar

In Myanmar, martial law has been imposed in Mindat, a town high in the hills of the Chin State, where the army has brutally suppressed the civilian population. This is where I and two other members of the PCANZ attended a Presbyterian Church of Myanmar General Assembly in 2018. It’s also where the PCANZ’s Petra Malcolm taught at a high school later that same year.

People known to those of us who have visited Myanmar have been living in fear of their lives. We have heard that they have abandoned their homes and fled into the nearby forests to try to protect themselves.

Elsewhere in the Chin State, residents in Hakha have attacked soldiers in retaliation for what has been happening in Mindat. This will without doubt result in further repression by the army. It paints a very distressing picture. Diplomatic efforts to urge restraint have so far fallen on deaf ears and there are deep-seated fears for the future of the Chin people in this region. Further updates can be followed on sites like this one

India

In India, the Christian community is mourning the loss of the Rev P K Tandy, minister of Christ Church in Jagadhri - a region with historic ties to the PCANZ. Rev Tandy had recently been unwell and his death was recorded as heart attack, rather than Covid-19. I sent a letter to his family on behalf of Global Mission, expressing our deepest condolences on their loss.

Vanuatu

In the light of the above, it is encouraging that I can conclude with something more positive. Talua Theological Training Institute in Vanuatu has re-opened, more than a year after closure due to damage sustained from Cyclone Harold. Along with other partners, the PCANZ provided financial assistance to the Presbyterian Church of Vanuatu in their rebuilding programme. We were thanked for our support at their re-opening ceremony. While we are still unable to travel to Vanuatu, we celebrate this good news with them.

PressGo

It has been exciting to see new applications come in for Give-it-a-Go grants.  These special grants are for one-off mission idea projects and we have made 12 grants to date.  We are only budgeting on making 50 of these grants this year as a pilot philanthropy, so if you have been thinking about applying – get on with it.  ‘Thinking caps on’ as they say!

The grants are for $500 and are open at any time.  Please remember that we can’t make a grant for a project that has already been run, so make sure applications are in plenty of time before the anticipated event.  Application forms available from Lisa. We have been getting them turned round in week or so.

It's interesting to see that many of the applications are coming from an idea that young people in the church have had, like a holiday supper for homeless in the street, and end of term BBQ for a neighbourhood school.  We’ve also funded a market day, art exhibition, street party, two midwinter/Matariki events and a light party.

This is not really aimed at running an event you have run before, so we are looking for you to stretch your mission imagination and muscles!

We’ve been re-advertising our larger Presbyterian Foundation grants too.  They are available for people-to-people mission, outside your usual activities.  These grants can be up to $10,000 and we expect the sum asked for to be matched by the parish.  Deadlines for these grants are 1 August and 1 November.  Feel free to contact the PressGo Catalyst for more information or support with your application.  Deadlines, criteria and handy tips can also be found here.

PressGo was delighted to partner with Alpine Presbytery and KCML and bring “Coracle, a Weekend for Explorers”, to life in the beautiful setting of Hanmer Springs.  Stories were told, ideas sparked, seeds planted and many more metaphors for what it seems the Spirit is saying to the Church!  Watch and listen for what will happen next!

Begg Dickie Scholarship

We are pleased to invite applications for the Begg Dickie Scholarship. The scholarship is for postgraduate study in New Zealand or overseas and is offered once-a-year.

We encourage any minister who graduated from KCML to consider applying – particularly, applications that will enhance diversity of the PCANZ and its mission scholarship.

The scholarship will be awarded for a term of three years.

Applications to be received by September, scholarships awarded in October. Details can be found here. Send applications to Susan Peters (registrar).

Coracle

Darryl Tempero writes that it was a privilege last month for KCML to join Press Go and Alpine Presbytery in hosting "Coracle" in Hanmer Springs. A coracle is a small boat that Celtic missionaries would set out in, sometimes with no rudder, and usually with no idea where they might end up - but trusting that God will lead them in mission. This is a wonderful image for those who gathered to tell stories, and listen to what God was doing. From all around the country, a collection of 64 adults and 11 children - explorers, pioneers, and pilgrims - meeting with people of like mind, asking similar questions, and being inspired by stories of God's mission in our Church.

Intern Placements 2022

If your church is interested in partnering with KCML in the training and formation of a National Ordained Ministry intern for 2022-2023, contact Geoff New for an expression of interest form. At this stage we are unsure how many interns will be entering the programme, and where in the country we will require placements, but it is good to begin exploring options.

Presbyterian Church Schools

The oldest Presbyterian Church School in our network is Iona College in Havelock North. It was opened on 14 February 1914 with 48 boarders living in an unfinished Spanish Mission-style complex designed by architects Rush and Jones. However, rapid growth meant that by 1918 they had 125 boarders and were forced to use a new building, intended as a hospital, for accommodation.

Important founding figures were Mr Hugh Campbell, who donated the first eight acres, with Mr Mason Chambers adding an extra four acres. These gifts provided the spacious grounds which still remain as an important asset for the school. Rev Alexander Whyte, minister of St Columba from 1898-1910, petitioned the Church for a girls’ school which General Assembly agreed to in 1911. Miss Isabel Fraser, the first headmistress, offered to work for free for the first five years and served until her retirement in 1921. Her extensive research provided the name of the school – Iona, the crest – plus the Celtic cross; the school motto “Love, Joy, Peace”; the initial building design and also much of its early organisation. Interestingly, Miss Fraser is also credited with introducing the kiwifruit to this country.

Iona is named after the island in Scotland that St Columba made his missionary base in 563. Two school house names reinforce this connection; Columba and Gartan (Columba’s birthplace). Two more were added in 1966: Fraser, in memory of the first principal, and McNeil, in honour of Christina McNeil (1936-64), who was principal during the austerity of WWII, as well as the opening of St Martin’s chapel in 1958.

It is now nearly 100 years since the school reopened after the 1931 Napier earthquake, with 27 boarders and 9 days girls. Today Iona is a thriving state-integrated school accommodating 300 boarding and day girls (Year 7-13).

Peace and security

This Thursday I followed my common practice of wearing black with a ‘Thursdays in Black’ lapel badge.  This global movement, initiated by the World Council of Churches, commits to a world without rape and gender-based violence. With it having been Mothers’ Day recently, it is sobering to reflect on the failure of our society to protect women and children from assault. Police in New Zealand investigate an incident of family violence every five minutes. Three-quarters of assaults against women are committed by a family member, and three-quarters of partner violence-related deaths are perpetrated by men. This is an issue that we need to talk about in our churches and use resources such as the It’s not okay campaign

Ecumenical Women at the United Nations invites us to check out this video and make the #ThursdaysInBlack pledge below.

  • Pause for a moment of silence on Thursdays at noon to remember and honour those who have died at the hand of sexualised or gender-based violence.
  • Pray with us: We stand with invisible victims of sexual and gender-based violence. We see you. We hear you. You are not forgotten.
  • Post your prayers, photos, or inspirations on social media using the hashtag #ThursdaysinBlack
  • Pledge: I commit to Thursdays in Black. In solidarity. In protest. In mourning. For awareness. In hope.

By supporting Thursdays in Black, I stand in solidarity with 1 in 3 women worldwide who face violence in their lives; In protest against systems and societies that encourage violence in any form; In mourning for men, women and children who are harmed and killed in sexual violence; For awareness and knowledge about the challenges of sexual and gender-based violence; In the hope that a different reality is possible.

Covid Appeal for India

CWS has relaunched the Coronavirus Appeal for India. Our five partners work with Dalit and tribal or indigenous people in the state of Tamil Nadu, reaching tens of thousands of people including fish-workers, basket weavers and waste collectors. They have requested extra funding for hygiene supplies, food rations and health education. Please support our appeal and organise a fundraising event or collection.

Refugee Focus

Rev Sharon Ross Ensor has prepared worship resources for Refugee Sunday, 20 June, available by 1 June. CWS will launch Operation Refugee on 20 June, World Refugee Day. We invite your congregation to plan a banquet, meal or walk to raise funds for refugees in Jordan and Lebanon. Organiser Eric Park is keen to help - eric.park@cws.org.nz or phone 022 377 6606.

Together we can make it

In Jordan, refugees Abeer, Nabila and Iman have been growing a mountain of produce to support their families and the programmes of the Department of Service to Palestinian Refugees. Their enthusiasm has inspired others, helping them feed families - and grow in confidence.  Together we can make it is their story. Printed copies are available from Jordyn at cws@cws.org.nz.

Pray for Palestinians and Israelis

CWS calls for an end to violence in Israel and Palestine. We invite you to pray with us for Palestinians and Israelis, for a new path towards peace that comes with justice.

"We in the Middle East Council of Churches reaffirm our basic position that has not changed, which considers that lifting the occupation of the Palestinian people and enjoying their freedom, dignity and full rights are the means that lead to lasting stability and peace in the region…this people have the right to live a life of dignity, safety and prosperity, just like the peoples of the world!"

Church Property Trustees - Presbyterian Investment Fund

Deposits and withdrawals can be processed as normal during current alert levels, observing the requirement to provide advance notice for major (>$100,000) withdrawals. The interest rate paid on the PIF On-Call Fund is 1.0% pa. The interest rate on the PIF Long-Term Fund remains at 3.0% pa plus inflation. Rates are subject to change. The PIF is open to parishes, but not to individuals. For details on the Long Term Fund or further information, email the Trustees’ Executive Officer, Russell Garrett.

Church Property Trustees - Insurance Valuations

It’s around now that parishes are preparing budgets for the new financial year. It can be tempting to maintain the insurance expense at the same level as last year (or the year before that). Yet we know that it will often cost far more to repair or replace our buildings than we have allowed for with insurance cover. You can get an idea about how much cover you actually need by using the free Modal Valuation system created by our insurance broker, Crombie Lockwood. Please email lisa.adams@crombielockwood.co.nz to get access to a unique pre-populated data-set for your parish. Read more on church insurance – see page 4 of the Treasurers’ News.
